Christmas jewels

Way back in the summer in the first flush of our jewellery making, Chookie and I decided that my mother-in-law might like some of our creations for her Christmas. I bought a very her black and white agate heart cabochon and had a notion to make a pendant. And there it sat until last week where I finally decided what I wanted to do with it and, well, did it.

The setting is a wirework braid using five lengths of 1mm wire and the ends form the bale for hanging.

My braiding could be neater but I'm actually really pleased with it. I think it's wearable, anyway.

I made the kumihimo braids, too. The bracelet has a raised twist effect which suits my mil's more flamboyant tastes! I made the bale and eyepins with the same spiral design to match (there's real possibilities in this wire business) and added an obsidian, smokey agate and lavender pearl for some bling.

The ends are glued into magnetic stoppers with some of the Gutterman textiles glue I have for purses. I tried to take one off a different piece the other day to no avail, they really are stuck fast! And that's another tick on my list, we're getting there!

  1. Loving all the elements you've put together in this. It's also making me wonder if the big purple cabouchon I have from a damaged beyond repair brooch could be set in a wire braid like this too. I was given it amongst other things when I did some jewellery making and vintage repairs a life time ago. Hmmm I wonder where that is.

  2. Wow, well done! I love the black and white, and the details that make it so professional! I did some kumihimo braids a while back too, but I've never seen that raised twist effect, it's very good.

  3. I hope she loves it! I haven't tried kumihimo, is that a circle of plastic with notches and s hole in the middle? It looked like a complicated version of French knitting? Is it quicker? It certainly gets great results!!!

Hi! I'll try really hard to reply to comments by email (unless you're a no-reply Blogger in which case I can't!) because I love getting your messages but I'm a working mum and don't always manage - I read and appreciate every single one!
