It's perhaps not so strange that last week when I was childless (and missing Chook terribly) my thoughts turned all nostalgic and I finally made a start on the baby clothes quilt.
At the very start of last year I'd been cleaning out the loft and donated boxes and boxes of baby clothes to various sources - new babies with not-much-money and the like. I did keep a small pile of precious outfits, though. And thought perhaps they might be better served in a wee memory quilt, rather than lurking somewhat creepily in a drawer.
These wee rompers were well worn during Chookie's first 6 weeks! And I couldn't bear to part with them. But really - who wants a pile of clothes getting moved from cupboard to cupboard over the years! I do hope I'm doing the right thing getting all mental with the scissors, though.
First slippers from the Disney Store. Bought by Granny, natch.
So the pile sat in a....pile.......for a few months while I mused. And then the Fat Quarter Shop had one of its Wednesday Facebook sales and Cape Ann had lots of money off. Perfect!! And that was in March of last year. And everything had sat stuffed in a Liberty cord bag until I could pluck up the courage to take the rotary cutter to those wee cotton memories.
I've got 4 blocks done. They're finishing at 13in since I've just been sewing until they were done. And it's going to be a bigger quilt than I envisioned but I didn't just want charms of clothing, I wanted a bit of framing for them. They've got quite a lot of framing!
So I think I'll have about 12 blocks by the end. And really one should be a pocket to keep those darling slippers in. There's a weenie pair of socks, too. And *whispers* I think I might hand quilt it! But that's not a promise since I've never done a whole quilt by hand. I'm having fun, though!
It's looking fantastic. What an absolutely fab way to display those memories!!! Especially not just cutting a square patch, but keeping those little details in.
ReplyDeleteI like that you have kept them looking like clothes and not just cut the motifs off! Looks awesome.
ReplyDeleteAgreeing - it does look awesome! Definitely need a pocket for the slippers too :)
ReplyDeleteSeriously Missus this is going to be an awesome keepsake quilt. Chook will love it to bits when she's all grown up, if not before :)
ReplyDeleteThat's going to be super cute :o) I keep meaning to turn my rowing t-shirts from uni into a quilt, but I don't want to cut them up...
ReplyDeleteThis is such a fabulous idea!
ReplyDeleteAbout time! I've been waiting.
ReplyDelete;-)
Seriously though they look great. I love the way you've incorporated the tags and poppers and those tiny wittle squares!
How did you cope with the stretchiness of the baby grows? Did you use interfacing?
Yep, yep, yep...scissors is the way to go...it will now be a snuggly scrapbook!;)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely handquilt!!!:)
To to to gorgeous, wish I was clever enough to have kept my girls things for such a purpose!
ReplyDeleteCrap, ignore my smelling error ;-) *too too too*
ReplyDeleteOh what a wonderful quilt this will be. Not only memory land for you but a great keepsake for Chooks.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant! What a lovely project to indulge yourself in. Your vision for it is really gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThis is genius.... I love how the little squares of baby clothes look so adorable x
ReplyDeleteWhat a wonderful way to keep cute baby memories. Chook will treasure this most surely :)
ReplyDeleteI think this is a brilliant idea. And it looks gorgeous already. Yes it was a risk cutting into those clothes but totally paid off!
ReplyDeleteLynz, I think it's going to be perfect. Great idea on framing the blocks so.
ReplyDelete(and Emily with her "smelling error" just cracked me up :D)
What a fab collection of blocks!
ReplyDeleteHow lovely! I haven't kept any clothes at all, we just get mucky in them I think...
ReplyDeleteFabulous! What are you putting behind the clothes for stabilizer? I have a huge bin of clothes saved for the same project...
ReplyDeleteI think this is one of the coolest things I've seen! It's going to be amazing :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely fab, I have a stack of C's clothes to do the same thing with, and I think keeping some of the shape is exactly right, rather than just little cut out squares. Can't wait to see it finished, but no pressure (and it deserves hand quilting,it would be the perfect tv winter project!). :o)
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great idea.. I've just put my 2yr olds old clothes in the roof space but hoping they may b needed sometime x
