As you know, I've been making my bro and is luvvely wife a bed quilt for Christmas. I'm all basted and ready to go but need to buy thread. Now. I had always planned to do a 45 degree straight line in a mid grey to quilt with to keep it modern, not too patchworky and so that you see the diagonal lines theselves and not the thread, ifyerknoworrImean. But I'm now wondering if I should go with one of the multitudinous purple and pink variegated threads on the market. Here's the top before basting. Please excuse the ginormous crease up the middle where it's been folded over the bannister!
This is a better one of the colours, I think. It's on Kona ash if that makes any difference and the backing is a grey from Moda's Hometown collection.
Any thoughts? I'm swinging one way and then the other. The grey keeps it simple and clean looking, the pink might be a bit of fun, though. Grey more grown up, though? More stylish? Hmm.
Ooh, any favourite thread manufacturer recs, too? I'll need to order online so anything goes!
I really like this. I am probably not the person to make recommendations because apart from tomorrow when I hope to quilt my string greens quilt and will be using a different thread, I always use Gutterman for quilting. I do like the sound of variegated thread though. Loving this quilt pattern. It looks like you could make a big quilt relatively quickly?
ReplyDeleteHmm, I wonder if the grey thread would get lost on the back altogether. The variegated would be cool :o)
ReplyDeleteI always love the idea of variegated thread, but am not always satisfied with the end result, especially if you get a dark colour mixed in with the other shades. Perhaps a variegated thread with softer tones so as not to fight with the other fabrics. Love Kona Ash btw! Jxo
ReplyDeleteI would go with the grey, but that doesn't mean you have to!
ReplyDeleteOh Honey, I have a whole studio of variegated threads you could play with! I'm a huge fan of Superior threads (no need to get stressy over the poly argument) they have some fantastic variegated both in Rainbows (shiny) and Lava (matt) My particular fave is Rainbows called Seashell very soft very subtle but so, so pretty! and looks fab on all sorts of things :) I have just a tinsey bit left on a cone I can send you to try if you'd like. Although I buy cones from Machine Quilter, you can buy smaller spools from Barnyarns. Hope that helps, or confuses ... lol
ReplyDeleteI vote grey. Colorful thread seems like it would distract from the simplicity, yaknow?
ReplyDeleteQuilting with variegated is interesting because the different colors break up the quilting lines, depending on how they blend in with the background fabrics. If you want the lines to look continuous go with gray.
ReplyDeleteWell, you know that quilt shop in Linlithgow, the one on the corner, the ladies in there are a goldmine of thread knowledge! They have gutermann sulky variegated thread which I really like, and I reckon that a variegated grey thread (maybe with another colour in it) would look good :)
ReplyDeleteI like the grey thread. It will show up, the quilting will look really cool, especially after washing.
ReplyDeleteYou could use a thicker thread too....there are certain Perle cottons in a size 12 that you can use on your machine with a large eye needle. I just did a quilt with some....love the look!:)
wow this is lovely!! I love the idea of grey thread on the 45 angle going across the grey on the top and bottom sections of the quilt.
ReplyDeleteWhat if you also used a pink variegated or grey and pink variegated thread for the middle section - outlining the coloured cones and making half circles repeating across the width of the cones - one or two rows of that and ending with a straight row across the bottom. (do you know what I mean?) This would highlight the middle section on the front and look really cool on the back.
lol - i guess i am suggesting buy both threads and see what you like
it is beautiful lynz
It is going to be gorgeous, either way. Personally, I'd go with the grey!
ReplyDeleteLove how the quilt is turning out! Gorgeous!!
ReplyDeleteIf you want the quilting to make a statement I'd go with the grey - a coloured thread might distract
ReplyDeletePersonally though I'd be tempted not to go too geometrical with your quilting as it's in contrast to your fun applique shapes - let your lines wander a little and even have odd ones cross over others - keep it loose and wavy
I'd go grey, but I'm a weenie like that. I like to see the quilting, but not the thread. Either way you're going to rock it. It's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteI would go gray so that the design of the quilt can shine. Your quilting will still show but the thread won't steal the show! Just my humble opinion. Now as far as thread...I really like the thread at Connecting Threads and it is on sale right now. Something to think about.
ReplyDeleteThis is an awesome quilt! Since it's for your bro, I would go with the gray thread. The verigated would be cool too, but for a more gender friendly approach, I would go gray so as not to make the quilt 'too' girlie. They are going to love this!
ReplyDeleteI would go grey, mainly because a coloured thread will really show up the quilting and I find it shows up imperfections more, but that is a personal thing! I used a light grey Aurifil on Kona Ash for a table runner I did in straight line quilting recently and it worked exactly as I wanted and showed the lines rather than the thread. I can find the colour number if you want, just drop me an email.
ReplyDeleteI like both your ideas. There are some lovely variegated gray threads if you want a bit more fun but still wanted gray. I think that the quilt is spectacular, all of the quilting ideas here would work.
ReplyDeletei would go with grey AND pink variegated... is it even out there???
ReplyDeleteI think I'd either go for plain grey or a grey variegated...at least, I think that's what I think!! I like either YLI or King Tut quilting thread but most of the time I use standard Coats cotton for quilting (the same weight I use for piecing) and it's fine...good luck with the choice, whatever you choose will be as fabulous as the quilt!
ReplyDeleteNo idea but it is pretty!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous! I'm working on one with some yellow thread because I'm tired of using neutrals! Grey would look nice but I think pink would be fun too. Not much help am I?! I like Gutterman, my machine seems to do better with that than more expensive ones!
ReplyDeleteoh, tricky one. hmmm, just not sure - can you practice on smaller bits first with both options? Love the quilt though - very modern and stylish, yet still pretty.
ReplyDeleteHi Lynz - this quilt looks great! I say go for gray. I think that would look modern and elegant.
