an important start

The biggest thing on my winter stitching list was a bed quilt for my brother and his wife for Christmas. I started the prep work way back in September (gathering their colour ideas and running some quilt patterns by them) and this is what we've ended up with.

Grown up pink and any kind of purple are hard to come by! But we're good, I think. That Denyse Schmidt pattern isn't too patchworky, either, ifyaknoworrImean. I had fun choosing the matching threads, though. Is that a bit sad?

I hadn't anticipated the five hours of tracing and cutting I would need, though! Still, I think (hope!) it'll be a quick top to put together. I'm gambling a bit and not doing the hand needle-turn method that she suggests (coz I'm not that patient!!) I'm going for raw edge applique, again so that it's not too patchworky and maybe a bit more modern. I think I'm gonna straight line quilt, too.

I've spent tonight cutting the backing fabric and pritt-sticking on the biggest row of hills. Hoping to do some stitching tomorrow - wish us luck, eh? If it goes badly then we're sunk!!

  3. Ooooh liking the look of this pattern! You're so right grown up pinks and especially purple are so hard to find. I have next to no purple in my stash. It's my favourite colour and I just assumed my sewing tastes were vastly different - until I realised there just aren't that many nice purples.

  4. I'm sure that this will be gorgeous when you're done! My gutter mind couldn't help but think of the 'lady-parts' cushion when it saw those hills ;-)

  6. Hmm, interested to see what this turns into. I'm smiling at the thread though, I got irrationally excited at finding an e-bay seller with a huge range of Gutterman thread in colour groups that are much cheaper than the shops are...

  7. I have looked at that pattern many times and wondered what it would be like, now I can see what you come up with. I think raw edge applique is a great idea, and I love your fabrics.

  8. Love the choices, I think that raw edge will be great, esp with all the quilting. I am itching to make a quilt with lots of white solid in it, must add it to 'that' mental list!

Hi! I'll try really hard to reply to comments by email (unless you're a no-reply Blogger in which case I can't!) because I love getting your messages but I'm a working mum and don't always manage - I read and appreciate every single one!
