My Chookie has always had a habit of breaking her falls with her face. We had witch hazel permanently on standby for the forehead lumps when she was a toddler. The first week of school she fell and skinned all round her eye. And four times she has clattered her mouth off of something. When she was 2 she fell off the ottoman in the kitchen and bust up her top gum. When she was 3 she fell and hit her mouth off the knob at the bottom of her bed - her tooth went grey and she couldn't suck her thumb for a week. This easter she fell on rollerblades and busted her lip up good style. But this last one? Last week when we were on holiday? This is her best yet. And could be terminal for her tooth. This could be about the last photo I have of her with her pretty - if crooked - grin.
As brief as I can make it, okay? Last Tuesday evening we were happily hanging out in CenterParcs in Sherwood Forest cycling back to our lodge after a day of adventure golf and swimming. Chook wasn't watching where she was going and left the road, rode into a ditch and - you guessed it - her face broke her fall. What looked like another spectacular burst lip became a bit more serious when she announced that a tooth was missing. One of her front permanent teeth. At A&E (3 hours later) a maxillofacial surgeon jagged her up, shoved the tooth back into place (Spouse found it in the dark, in a ditch, in a forest. Miracles do happen!) and stitched it into her gum before glueing a metal bar across it and 2 surrounding teeth.
We came home the next day.
Our own dentist has referred us to Glasgow dental hospital because she needs a fairly urgent operation to make sure it stays healthy. Basically root canal surgery. And some other stuff. The chances of it restabilising itself are good, apparently. In the meantime it's soft foods only which is a nightmare because she really can't afford to lose any weight. Playtimes at school are being spent inside and I've jimmied my lunch hour so I can bring her home to eat. She's going to miss the school Halloween disco (can't possibly risk all those flailing dancing arms!), can't have her riding lesson and is also missing the conclusion of her swimming block at school - the fun session with all the inflatables. Heartbroken doesn't begin to cover it.
Spouse and I had a couple of days of shock. Not from the accident, I think, but from the emergency room stuff. Spouse nearly fainted when the stitching began! Even I was a bit wobbly (and I'm good with blood and stuff!) and I'm not feeling very bloggy but have actually been sewing so I may pop back in sooner than I think. And the blue tooth reference? The glue holding the metal in place is electric blue - she has 3 blue teeth, there's no missing her when she grins!
Oh Lynz not good sending you all a hug X
ReplyDeleteHow horrible, praying that her tooth makes it and that she is feeling better soon.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry you're going through all that ... especially for your little Chook! I hope the tooth makes it and you get back to your regularly scheduled events.
ReplyDeleteChook!!! You gotta watch where you are going!!!;O
ReplyDeleteeeek this makes me cringe. I hate eyeball and mouth injury stuff. I hope the tooth pulls thru.
ReplyDeleteOhh my goodness what an ordeal for everyone. Poor Chookie - hope it all works out well. Hugs!!!
ReplyDeleteoh holey hell! give her my best, and I am sending hugs for you all!
ReplyDeleteOh Lynz, I knew you were away but wandered why you were so quiet. Sending you, Spouse and Chook good wishes.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking about the Chook this morning hoping she is not hurting. Tell her I have phanthom mouth pains for her!
ReplyDeletePoor Chook!! HOpe her mouth feels better soon! Mouth accidents are always so scary. At least the glue wasn't black.
ReplyDeletePoor poor Chook! And poor you and spouse. What a nightmare. Really feeling for you all and hope the whole tooth thing works out ok. I'm sure the sewing will be a comfort right now.
ReplyDeleteOh dear! I hope all progresses well...it is so hard to see your kids hurt. (And I REALLY empathize with chook, I actually had dental surgery yesterday, no blue glue tho)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update.
ReplyDelete{{{{Hugs}}}} for you all.
Awe, poor Chookie! Hope all goes well and things are looking up soon. Big hug for her and you Lynz! (BUT I can't believe you were 30 mins from me!!!! Oh Bumm!)

ReplyDelete(Just deleted my earlier comment as I don't think it was in English ;-) )
ReplyDeleteawww poor little thing. I can totally empathise with her after my recent front toothy problems (although hers sounds a whole lot more traumatic!) I think blue teeth for halloween are cool though.
It's amazing what they can do for teeth now. {{{Hugz}}} Hope it all works out soon!
It all sounds really traumatic for all of you... Hope the tooth takes and all's well that ends well!
ReplyDeleteOh no! Poor chook and poor you guys too - I'm not too squeamish but it sounds horrific to have to watch. Hope it turns out ok though and that she gets over the disappointment soon x
ReplyDeleteOh dear. I've got my fingers crossed that all this works and she keeps her tooth.
ReplyDeleteFinn had a bad knock years ago and after a while both his top teeth fell out....but they were only baby ones which was good. One adult one has now come in but the other shows no sign of turning up - not sure what we do if it doesn't - I haven't plucked up the courage to ask the dentist about that bit! Juliex
Oh, my gosh! What a horrible thing for all of you, Lynz. I'm hoping that it takes real well and all is right with the smile, but if not, they have all sorts of great options now to correct what ever she needs.
ReplyDeleteMy brother was in a bad car accident at age 16 and 2 of his teeth were broken off. They were able to fix him just fine, and that was ages ago, things are so much better now.
I'm sorry the Chook is missing out on all the fun stuff, but I'm sure you'll make it up to her as best you can. Poor little kid, she's a bit accident prone, huh? She needs a suit of chain mail, why don't you whip her one right up?!
